Recently widowed Cary Scott (Jane Wyman) seems to have recovered from her husband's death. Suburban affluence, country club membership, a new television set, and a host of wealthy men are vying for her hand, to the approval of her socially-mobile children. But when Ron Kirby (Rock Hudson), a younger gardener from outside her social set, begins to win her heart and her mind, she realizes the emptiness of her existence. But as Christmas approaches, her newfound freedom causes her friends, neighbors and even children to react with barely muted horror. Christmas never felt so stark as in Sirk's masterpiece of melodramatic tension.
