A WOMAN OF PARIS

1923

Director: CHARLES CHAPLIN

EDNA PURVIANCE, ADOLPHE MENJOU

ALL SEATS $12.00

At the height of his powers, and having just completed his first feature, Charlie Chaplin abandoned his tramp character and made A WOMAN OF PARIS, a searing drama, little seen in the US. Marie St. Clair (Edna Purviance) has been abandoned by her fiance, Jean Millet (Carl Miller), and finds herself the mistress of Pierre Revel (Adolphe Menjou), one of the wealthiest men in Paris. When she encounters Jean again, her downfall is swift and heartbreaking. Applauded by the press but rejected by the public, then pulled from distribution by Chaplin himself, A Woman of Paris, with its influential, understated acting and deft storytelling, now stands as one of Chaplin's greatest directorial achievements.

Presented with a recording of the original Chaplin score, newly restored, orchestrated and conducted by Timothy Brock.

Restored in 4K by Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna at L'Immagine Ritrovata Laboratory.
