Director F.W. Murnau practically invented German Expressionism in classics like NOSFERATU (1922), THE LAST LAUGH (1924), and FAUST (1926). The latter adapts the German legend (and parts of Goethe’s play) to tell the timeless story of the alchemist Faust (Gösta Ekman), who is tempted by the demon Mephisto (Emil Jannings) to make a deal with the Devil to attain power, youth, and glory. The most expensive and elaborate German production at the time of its making (though Fritz Lang’s METROPOLIS would surpass it the following year), FAUST is distinguished by some of the most astounding visuals and captivating in-camera special effects ever achieved in cinema history.
