DOWN THE WORMHOLE 2024

The Heights' popular sci-fi series returns, with five mind-bending science fiction classics! This year we have a pair of Kubricks, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and 2001 ON 70MM, as well as a 40th Anniversary screening of THE TERMINATOR, a 25th Anniversary screening of GALAXY QUEST, and the 1978 version of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, a fitting tribute to the late Donald Sutherland. One of our most popular series returns to take you places you could never imagine.

THE TERMINATOR

Sept. 19, 2024, 7:30 p.m.

Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) is a waitress struggling to get by in mid-80s LA. Literally out of the blue, a young man named Kyle (Michael Biehn) enters her life, with wild-eyed tales of time-travel and end-of-the-world fantasies. But when the cybernetic assassin (Arnold Schwarzenegger) shows up, destroying everything in its wake, Sarah realizes she'd better work with Kyle or her life, and the fate of the human race, are over. Schwarzenegger became a mega-star and Cameron became an A-list director with THE TERMINATOR, whose intensity was shocking for its time, and has since become a modern classic.

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS

Oct. 24, 2024, 7:30 p.m.

San Francisco was never so menacing in this, the first remake of the classic INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. Director Philip Kaufmann creates an atmosphere that is at once creepy and terrifying, and Brooke Adams, Leonard Nemoy (Spock!), Veronica Cartwright ("Alien') and the dear-departed Donald Sutherland are perfect as the first people trying desperately to save the world from killer seed pods from outer space. The perfect close to this year's Sci-Fi series also has one of the most incredible final scenes in cinema history. Don't miss this rare screening!

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

Sept. 26, 2024, 7:30 p.m.

Alex (Malcolm McDowell) is a disaffected young man in dystopian London. With his Droogs, a stylish gang of white-clad hooligans, he terrorizes people with a bit of the "ultraviolence." One night he goes too far, killing a woman, betrayed by his Droogies, convicted and sent to prison. There, Alex is plunged into an experimental rehabilitation program, and dumped back into the "real" world. Kubrick's disturbing masterpiece was perhaps his most controversial film ever, and has since become a classic.

GALAXY QUEST

Oct. 10, 2024, 7:30 p.m.

"Galaxy Quest" is a shlocky sci-fi TV show, now in reruns, its cast relegated to signing autographs at annoying fanboy conventions. Enter the Thermians, an alien race who are on the verge of being wiped out by an overpowering enemy. Having crafted a replica of the "Galaxy Quest" ship, the Thermians, who believe the show was the truth, now expect these bumbling actors to save the day. This epic spoof of "Star Trek" works wonders not just from its affectionate send up of television cliches, but from its stellar cast that included Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Alan Rickman, but also future stars in Sam Rockwell and Rainn Wilson (let's not forget Enrico Colantoni's amazing turn as Mathesar, leader of the Thermians). GALAXY QUEST's script is so great David Mamet considers it one of four 'perfect' films in Hollywood history.

2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY in 70MM

Oct. 17, 2024, 7 p.m.

Working with visionary author Arthur C. Clarke, Stanley Kubrick blew the world's mind with 2001: A Space Odyssey, considered by many to be one of the greatest films of all time. A strange black rectangle, the monolith, appears in pre-human times and helps apes discover tools... and violence: when it reappears on the moon in modern times, the monolith communicates the same messages to HAL, the artificial intelligence running the spacecraft. This special presentation is an "unrestored" 70mm print made from the original negative in 2018.
