CONNERY: BOND

Beginning in 1962 with Dr. No, the James Bond films have captivated international audiences like no other action film in history. And despite 26 films, with six different Bonds (seven if you include David Niven in the comedy version of Casino Royale), pretty much everyone agrees, Sean Connery is James Bond for all-time. Muscular, graceful, and surprisingly humorous, Connery took Ian Fleming's upper-crust spy and brought him down to earth, all the while sporting his signature Scottish accent (for a very British man.) Connery defined Bond, and all others will forever be compared to his. Don't miss the first four Bond films, all in rare 35mm prints.

DR. NO

June 6, 2019, 7:30 p.m.

35MM PRESENTATION

Dr. No laid the groundwork for all future Bond films with the iconic opening theme, the shot of Bond seen through the gun barrel, the gadgets, and the girl, in this case Honey Ryder, played to perfection by Ursula Andress. Here, Bond heads to Jamaica, this time to investigate the murder of an MI6 agent at the hands of SPECTRE's evil henchmen. Mechanical dragons, poison, silencers, and a nefarious plot to thwart NASA all make this first Bond a thrill-a-minute ride.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE

June 13, 2019, 7:30 p.m.

35MM PRESENTATION

Often regarded as the most serious of the Bond films (until Daniel Craig came along), From Russia with Love features a convoluted plot and some of the most intense villains in the whole series, including Robert Shaw's Irish henchman and Lotte Lenya's knife-in-the-boot villainess. This one not only features SPECTRE, an international association of very bad people, but SMERSH, a Soviety counterintelligence agency--and both are hell-bent on destroying Bond! Introducing Desmond Llewelyn as the gadget-meister Q, who would play the role for the next 36 years.

GOLDFINGER

June 20, 2019, 7:30 p.m.

35MM PRESENTATION

The first big blockbuster in the series, earning more than the first two put together, and ratcheted up the gadgets and the weird, weird plot not to mention the insane Bond theme sung by Shirley Bassey. While on vacation in Florida, Bond is given the assignment of foiling the plot of the eponymous evildoer Goldfinger, who's intent on robbing Fort Knox. Famous for the death of Bond's girlfriend by gold paint, Goldfinger has some of the best supporting characters in all the movies: Honor Blackman's Pussy Galore and Harold Sakata's Oddjob, who can kill people with his hat.

THUNDERBALL

June 27, 2019, 7:30 p.m.

35MM PRESENTATION

SPECTRE is back, this time hijacking a pair of nuclear bombs and demanding 100 million pounds in diamonds (forget dollars, the British pound is what counts in the world.) Naturally, SPECTRE retreats with their booty to the Caribbean, meaning Bond and all the beautiful people get to romp in bathing suits. Lots of underwater action, shark attacks, jet packs, and more, as Connery struts his stuff in what is, adjusted for inflation, the biggest box office smash of the entire run.
