BOB FOSSE: LIFE'S A CABARET

Dancing professionally since the age of 13, Bob Fosse quickly saw himself as the true successor to Fred Astaire. But with his triumphs on Broadway, cinema and television, in many ways he eclipsed even the great Astaire. Working at a feverish pace, Fosse would dance, direct, choreograph, and produce on stage before working in movies, and later all at the same time--in 1973 alone he won an Oscar, Emmy and Tony award for three different productions! His exhausting work ethic and often punishing routines left his cast and crew weary, angry, but ultimately grateful for giving them the best opportunities of their careers, and his visionary choreography changed dance as we know it. The Heights is proud to present four Bob Fosse classics, scanning three decades, films rarely seen in the Twin Cities.

THE PAJAMA GAME

June 10, 2021, 7:30 p.m.

DIGITAL CINEMA PRESENTATION

When Sid (John Raitt, Bonnie's Dad) takes over managing the Sleeptite Pajama Factory, he quickly falls for Babe (Doris Day). Trouble is, Babe's in charge of the factory's union, and they're in the midst of fighting tooth-and-nail over a 7 1/2 cent raise! Fosse hadn't directed a film at this point, but he couldn't have had a better man than Stanley Donen shoot his complicated dance numbers. This delightful musical has rarely been available to stream at home and virtually never appears in theaters--don't miss it!

This screening made possible by permission of The George Abbott Estate.

NEW Digital restoration! Original ROADSHOW version!

For his directorial debut, Fosse turned to Sweet Charity, the hit Broadway musical that earned him a Tony for best choreography. The story of a young taxi dancer, the eponymous Charity (Shirley MacLaine), and her many failures at love, is bittersweet and beautiful. A box office failure in its day, Sweet Charity has since been appreciated for Fosse's brilliant choreography.

CABARET

June 2, 2021, 7:30 p.m.

BONUS SCREENING ADDED WEDNESDAY JUNE 2nd, our Thursday June 3rd screening is SOLD OUT!

DIGITAL CINEMA PRESENTATION

Set in Weimar Berlin in 1931, Cabaret was a musical unlike any other: frank in its depictions of sexuality and juxtaposing upbeat musical numbers with Nazi brutality, it could only have been made in the 1970s and only by Bob Fosse. This shocking and surprising musical hit brought Fosse back from the dead after the financial disaster of Sweet Charity, winning 8 Academy Awards, including Best Director, Actress for Liza Minnelli, and Supporting Actor for Joel Gray as the emcee.

ALL THAT JAZZ

June 24, 2021, 7:30 p.m.

DIGITAL CINEMA PRESENTATION

Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is directing a stage musical and a challenging motion picture at the same time. Hopped up on Dexedrine and cigarettes, unable to remain faithful to any of the loves of his life, Gideon has begun to have visions of the Angel of Death (Jessica Lange), and eventually his hard living takes its toll. A thinly veiled account of Fosse's near-death experience directing the film Lenny and the musical Chicago on Broadway in the same year, Fosse crafted an autobiographical film that is blisteringly honest and unabashedly entertaining.
