“FOUND FOOTAGE FEST: BEST OF THE MIDWEST”

The Found Footage Festival is back in Minneapolis, at the Heights Theatre, for a “Best Of the Midwest” FFF show, featuring all footage found in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio. Planning some special guests and surprises as well. Don’t miss it. Presented by the Brooklyn Brewery as part of its “Mash” series of film, food, and art culture. A portion of proceeds from ticket sales will go to benefit the local Twin Cities chapter of Slow Foods USA.

“IT’S A GIFT” (1934) – 35mm presentation.

Starring W.C. FIELDS, BABY LeROY, KATHLEEN HOWARD. Directed by NORMAN Z. McLEOD. Not only is It’s a Gift one of W.C. field’s greatest comedies, it is also a hilarious deconstruction of the conventions of what American family life of the 1930’s was supposed to be. A true classic! Starring W.C. FIELDS, BURNS & ALLEN, RUDY VALLEE, BABY ROSE MARIE, CAB CALLOWAY, BELA LUGOSI, FRANKLIN PANGBORN. Directed by A. EDWARD SUTHERLAND. “MY MAN GODFREY” (1936) – 35mm presentation.

Starring WILLIAM POWELL, CAROLE LOMBARD, ALICE BRADY, EUGENE PALLETTE, GAIL PATRICK. Directed by GREGORY LaCAVA. The definitive screwball comedy, My Man Godfrey follows the madcap antics of a wealthy and eccentric family when they hire a down-and-out “forgotten man” as their butler. My Man Godfrey features brilliant performances by Carole Lombard and William Powell, and was the first film to receive Academy Award nominations in all four acting categories. 35mm print courtesy Universal Pictures.

“TRUE CONFESSION” (1937) – 35mm presentation.

Starring FRED MacMURRAY, CAROLE LOMBARD, JOHN BARRYMORE, UNA MERKEL. Directed by WESLEY RUGGLES. Carole Lombard returns in this rarely seen screwball black comedy about a woman who just can’t tell the truth and it is the hidden gem of our series. Fred MacMurray is outstanding as Carole’s patience tested husband and John Barrymore boarders on the surreal as a shady extortionist trying to blackmail them. Helen (Carole Lombard) and Ken (Fred MacMurray) are a pretty strange couple. She is a pathological liar, and he is a scrupulously honest (and therefore unsuccessful) lawyer. When Helen is accused of murder it is up to Ken to defend her in court…but is she really innocent, or is she just lying again. 35mm print courtesy Universal Pictures.

“THE THIEF OF BAGDAD” (1924) – DCP Presentation.

Starring DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS. Directed by RAOUL WALSH. The Thief of Bagdad remains one of the most visually stunning of all silent films with trick photography, lavish sets (compliments of William Cameron Menzies) and a sense of style that makes this Arabian Knights fantasy a lavish movie going experience and perhaps Douglas Fairbanks’ greatest production. The Thief of Bagdad is even more incredible in this wonderful new digital restoration!! A recalcitrant thief vies with a duplicitous Mongol ruler for the hand of a beautiful princess.

Starring GRETA GARBO, MELVYN DOUGLAS. Directed by ERNST LUBITSCH. Our series concludes with Greta Garbo’s first full comedy, which is a classic of the genre under Ernst Lubitsch’s solid direction. “RIDE LONESOME” (1959) – 35mm presentation.

Starring RANDOLPH SCOTT, JAMES BEST, JAMES COBURN, PERNELL ROBERTS, KAREN STEELE, LEE VAN CLEEF. Directed by BUDD BOETTICHER. One of the acclaimed western collaborations of Randolph Scott and Budd Boetticher. Scott plays a bounty hunter bringing fugitive James Best to justice with his brother hot on their trail to set him free. 35mm print courtesy Columbia Pictures.

Most often remembered for portraying sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane on seven seasons of "The Dukes of Hazzard", actor James Best has also appeared in 80+ feature films and hundreds of TV shows since initially being signed to Universal Pictures in 1949. James Best has appeared alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood including Humphrey Bogart, Tony Curtis, Clint Eastwood, Henry Fonda, Steve McQueen, Audie Murphy, Paul Newman, Barbara Stanwyck, James Stewart and countless others. TV appearances include The Andy Griffith Show, The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Fugitive, Wagon Train, Rawhide, Bonanza and many, many more.
Join James Best for an evening of stories and film-clips from his more than six decades in show business. Followed by a signing of photos and his book "Best in Hollywood".

Not only is this the definitive film version of the 1927 stage musical Show Boat, it is also a cinema masterpiece and not to be missed on the big screen! “RIO BRAVO” (1959) – DCP Presentation.

Starring JOHN WAYNE, DEAN MARTIN, RICKY NELSON. Directed by HOWARD HAWKS. Less a western than an extended riff on friendship and loyalty, Rio Bravo is a delight. John Wayne shows off his comic chops as a sheriff who has to rely on a drunk, and old man, and a kid crooner to save a town. DCP courtesy Warner Bros.

“CHICAGO” (1927) – 35mm presentation.

Starring PHYLLIS HAVER, VICTOR VARCONI, EUGENE PALLETTE. Directed by FRANK URSON. Long before the award wining 2002 film musical CHICAGO, the sordid tale of jazz and booze loving Roxie Hart first hit the silver screen in this highly entertaining 1927 silent pre code film. Actually based upon a true life crime story, Phyllis Haver does a spectacular job as Roxie Hart and really shows what made the 1920’s roar!  The beautifully restored 35mm print we will be screening is the original silent road show version complete with Intermission. 35mm print courtesy UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Cecil B. Starring PAUL MUNI, ANN DVORAK. Directed by HOWARD HAWKS. The original (and still the best) version of an ambitious gangster who thinks “the world is yours”. Paul Muni is insane as Scarface, a vicious killer who’s a bit too protective of his sister. 35mm print courtesy Universal Pictures.

“TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT” (1944) – 35mm presentation.

“HIS GIRL FRIDAY” (1940)

Starring CARY GRANT, ROSALIND RUSSELL. Directed by HOWARD HAWKS. This Perhaps our favorite hawks, and maybe the greatest screwball ever made, Girl Friday sees Cary Grant roping Russell into one last assignment before she marries that milquetoast “who looks like Ralph Bellamy” (played by Ralph Bellamy)
