A STARRY SILENT SUMMER NIGHT SPECIAL
"THE PATSY" (1928)
THURSDAY JULY 30, 2009. ONE SHOW ONLY. 7:30PM
ALL SEATS $8.00
Advance tickets available

“THE PATSY” (1928) Starring MARION DAVIES, MARIE DRESSLER, LAWRENCE GRAY. Directed by KING VIDOR.

PLUS LIVE ORGAN ACCOMPANIMENT BY KARL EILERS AT THE KEYBOARD OF THE HEIGHTS MIGHTY WURLITZER!!

MARION DAVIES, one of our personal favorites around here, stars in this great comedy directed by KING VIDOR. Marion was a very gifted comedian, but WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST felt it was beneath her talents to do comedy, so most of her pictures were big stuffy costume dramas. When she was able to do a comedy though, her real talents were able to shine, and THE PATSY is a great example. This film also marked the beginning of MARIE DRESSLER’S incredible comeback at the age of 60!  SO DON’T MISS IT!!!
35mm print courtesy Warner Bros.

A Cinderella fable for the Jazz Age, King Vidor's The Patsy (1928) is a perfectly-tooled vehicle for the comic talents of Marion Davies. The actress stars as Pat Harrington, the neglected daughter of a would-be society matron (Marie Dressler) and a brow-beaten father (Dell Henderson). While Pat's older sister Grace (Jane Winton) is encouraged to dress well (freely borrowing Pat's new clothes) and date the most eligible bachelors at the Yacht Club, Pat is expected to blend into the background and tend to her kitchen chores. Pat harbors a secret crush on Grace's boyfriend Tony (Orville Caldwell), so when Grace steps out with a debonair playboy (Lawrence Gray), the blond wallflower seizes the opportunity to snare Tony's attention. Acting on Tony's own advice, Pat attempts to win his favor by "cultivating a personality," which in her mind means spouting nonsensical platitudes from self-help books.
