Bishop Brougham (David Niven) has a problem: he's trying to raise funds for a new cathedral, and is falling far short. His prayers are answered by an angel, Dudley (Cary Grant). But Brougham doesn't understand that this feisty angel isn't there to help get the cathedral built, but to patch up the Bishop's relationship with his wife, Julia (Loretta Young) and daughter, Debby (Karolyn Grimes), not to mention his parishioners all of whom are sick to death of the Bishop's endless fundraising.
