For his directorial debut, Fosse turned to Sweet Charity, the hit Broadway musical that earned him a Tony for best choreography. The story of a young taxi dancer, the eponymous Charity (Shirley MacLaine), and her many failures at love, is bittersweet and beautiful. A box office failure in its day, Sweet Charity has since been appreciated for Fosse's brilliant choreography.
